A countess who lives alone on the island of Madeira sustains her youth and beauty through regular infusions of the life essence of her visitors. She is soon entangled with a romance-clouded poet who believes it is his fate to join her in the world of eternal life. However, a forensic scientist has examined several drained bodies, and concludes that the culprit is in fact a vampire.
