The GUINEA PIG series became infamous in Japan and quickly around the world for its vivid and unforgettable (and many charged, tasteless) depictions of sadistic violence and horrific situations. The final film produced in the series was DEVIL DOCTOR WOMAN. While more blacker-than-black comedy than outright horror, the film still contains the gruesomeness that made the series notorious. Peter is a transvestite amateur surgeon, who operates on his patients in ways almost too horrible to mention. Each undesired operation, however, affords the opportunity to recount a sick scenario. BOOK OF SHADOWS: BLAIR WITCH 2 is the sequel to the 1999 thriller THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. The first film's famously effective horror was created in large part with its faux authenticity. Shot on handheld video, the film presented itself as the genuine footage of three students' fatal search for the mysterious Blair Witch. BOOK OF SHADOWS: BLAIR WITCH 2, which purports to be a fictional reenactment of real events, complicates the original's illusion of reality. Tourists have flocked to Burkittsville, Maryland to see evidence of the original film and its underlying mythology. Four of these visitors--Tristan and Stephan, a couple researching a book; Erica, a Wiccan; and Kim, a Goth--join up with town troublemaker Jeff for his inaugural Blair Witch Hunt tour. When they wake up after a night of partying, most of their possessions have been destroyed and they are unable to account for a large block of time. As they piece together memories, inexplicable events spiral to a terrifying climax. Director Joe Berlinger, an acclaimed documentarian making his first foray into dramatic film, creates a disorienting otherworld in which video clips, flashbacks, and visions are indistinguishable from the reality of the present. Director Stuart Gordon delivers another chilling tale with CASTLE FREAK. A dysfunctional American family learns that they have inherited a 12th-century Italian castle and travels to visit it. As soon as they arrive, strange things start happening--bizarre noises come from deep within the castle, and objects turn up mysterously broken. The family's blind daughter begins telling stories of someone visiting her room at night. When two bodies are found in the dungeon savagely murdered, the family must unlock the castle's evil past in order to save themselves from a similar fate. Dispensing his usual 50/50 mix of horror and comedy, Gordon makes this an out-and-out horror film complete with monsters, old castles, and plenty of bumps in the night.
