Francis Ford Coppola's directorial debut, produced by horror king Roger Corman, is a terror-filled tale of family ties chopped to pieces. DEMENTIA 13's opening scene of Louise and John Haloran alone on a boat drifting nowhere (as an Elvis Presley song plays hauntingly) is reminiscent of many Hitchcock films. Its 1963 release was just the beginning of what, for Coppola, would be a long career of helming chillingly powerful masterworks such as APOCALYPSE NOW and THE GODFATHER.Set in a spooky Irish castle, DEMENTIA 13 begins as the Haloran family gathers to memorialize the death of the youngest sister, Kathleen. While various family members plot and connive, an ax murderer is terrorizing the grounds, and Kathleen's body shows up at just the wrong time. Slowly, the family members become increasingly suspicious of each other--as well as of the ghosts that haunt the castle. CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST was for years reviled as one of the most repugnant and morally questionable of the 1970s spate of cannibal films--and possibly the most horrifying ever. But director Ruggero Deodato embarked upon the project with the intention of criticizing the very violence he was portraying. Set in the Amazonian jungles, the film is a pseudo-documentary that follows Professor Harold Moore (Robert Kerman) into the
Green Inferno
as he searches for a documentary crew that came to the jungle the previous year to make a film about the storied cannibals that lived there, and never made it back. Now, Moore meets some natives and discovers the footage from the crew`s expedition, and upon returning to New York, he watches it to find out what really happened. The truth is too horrible for words, proving that savagery is not limited to indigenous peoples, and the morally outrageous film proceeds to indict the exploitative practices of certain documentary practices. However, the extremity of the violence portrayed was enough to put Deodato in hot water with the law, and with censors who claimed it was far too realistic. The career of the promising director, who had worked under a list of Italian luminaries that included Roberto Rossellini (ROME: OPEN CITY, PAISAN, VOYAGE IN ITALY), was essentially ended with this brutal, seminal film--for which he will nonetheless always be remembered.

This set contains two classic horror films from producer Val Lewton.While rarely considered to be one of Val Lewton's best films, ISLE OF THE DEAD does contain the producer's typically effective use of atmosphere. Set during the 1912 war on a Greek Island, the film focuses on six people who are staying on a remote island in order to escape the plague. Boris Karloff gives his typically strong performance as General Pherides, while Ellen Drew plays a Greek girl suspected of being a vampire. Constant winds and creepy sets illustrate each character's general anxiety as disease and suspicions build to a chilling climax.An intriguing change of pace from chillmaster Val Lewton, BEDLAM tells the story of an innocent girl imprisoned in a ghastly 18th-century insane asylum. Nell, an aspiring young actress, rejects the patronage of a London nobleman after learning of the aristocrat's indifference to sadistic practices at the local insane asylum. When word of Nell's accusations reach Master Sims (Boris Karloff), the villainous director of the madhouse, the brutal doctor attempts to protect his own reputation by casting doubt on the young woman's sanity.
