The Fog (UR/WS/DVD)

An island off the Oregon coast is the setting for this salty yarn of ghosts, lepers, betrayal, vengeance, and teen angst. A fog-enshrouded schooner from 1865 returns from the bottom of the sea to wreak vengeance on the locals of the island, and it's up to local DJ Stevie Wayne (Selma Blair), her charter-boat-captain lover, Nick (Tom Welling, from TV's SMALLVILLE), and his wayward girlfriend, Elizabeth (Maggie Grace, from TV's LOST), to save the day. All three are related to the town's founding fathers, with whom the shipbound ghosts have an ancient score to settle. What that score is no one seems to know, but they need to find out, fast. DeRay Davis (BARBERSHOP) provides comic relief as Nick's lusty first mate, but the real scene stealer here is the fog itself, which is much more animated than in the 1980 John Carpenter original. Thanks to some nice CGI work, it slithers in, around, and under everything. Though gussied up with an angst-rock soundtrack and beautiful young TV actors, THE FOG is, at heart, a good old fashioned ghost story, replete with period costumes and inter-dimensional romance. Director Rupert Wainwright (STIGMATA) is good at capturing little details like the eerie tinkling of deep-sea fishing hooks hung out to dry, the textures of moisture-beaded shower stall doors, and the perfectly toned skin of lead actress Grace as she wanders around in her negligee. John Carpenter and his partner, Debra Hill--co-creators of the first FOG--served as producers.

Jaws (DVD) Jaws (DVD) » Jaws (DVD)

From the best-selling novel by Peter Benchley, Steven Spielberg directed this thrill ride of terror. During the height of beach season, the Massachusetts resort town of Amity Island is terrorized one summer by surprise attacks from a great white shark. Three unlikely partners team up to hunt down the rogue and destroy it: the new chief of police from New York (Roy Scheider), a young university-educated oceanographer (Richard Dreyfuss), and a crusty old-time fisherman (Robert Shaw). The film shoot was notoriously difficult for the young Spielberg, who had directed only one feature film before JAWS. The mechanical shark seldom operated correctly, and Spielberg was frequently forced to create the idea of terror without actually showing the shark. However, after the film premiered it went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time--surpassing THE GODFATHER and becoming the first film to gross more than a hundred million dollars. Composer John Williams created the score to JAWS, which has since become a well-known theme of impending doom. Ron and Valerie Taylor were responsible for filming live sharks in Australia; their sequences were later mixed with footage of the mechanical shark.

HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL: Steven Price (a very hammy Rush) is a wealthy amusement park owner who invites several strangers to his shrewish wife's birthday party, this year held in the abandoned Vannacutt Institute for the Mentally Insane. There, he offers a prize of one million dollars to each party-goer who can spend the entire night in the creepy and cavernous building. As Mr. and Mrs. Price play a bitter game of cat and mouse, the guests begin to think there are more ominous forces at work, especially after the body count begins to creep higher and higher. A remake of the 1958 low-budgeter starring Vincent Price.NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: George Romero's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD is a low-budget, homegrown classic that had great difficulty finding a distributor at the time of its 1968 release, and has since become one of the most influential horror films of all time. Aside from its visceral impact years before realistic gore became the fashion, the film is also important for its portrayal of a black man as the protagonist during a time when race relations were an extremely sensitive issue in the United States.Seven people secluded in a Pennsylvania farmhouse face relentless attacks by reanimated corpses seeking to eat their flesh. The group, which includes a married couple and their daughter, a pair of young lovers, and an African-American man, try to keep their sanity as the living dead try endlessly to enter the house. The only way to stop the zombies is to burn them or issue a severe blow to their heads. Radio news reports tell of the plague taking over the eastern United States, while the ever-decreasing band of survivors rapidly loses ground in the battle to both keep peace with one another and stay alive.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33

Billy Wilder's Cold War satire, derived
from an energetic Molnar comedy the director had seen in 1929, probably owes as much to NINOTCHKA, perhaps the best known film of his idol Ernst Lubitsch.
It stars James Cagney as C.J. MacNamara, a Coca-Cola executive who comes to West Berlin to promote the sugary brew on the other side of the Iron Curtain, hoping, in the process, to be promoted to the post of director of West European operations.
He soon learns that his real job is babysitting his boss's 17-year-old daughter Scarlett (Pamela Tiffin), who has secretly married volatile Communist Otto Piffl (Horst Bucholz) during her soujourn. By the time McNamara learns this small detail, his boss (Howard St. John) is about to arrive in Berlin. After he gets Piffl arrested by the East German police, who torture him by forcing him to listen to Itsy-Bitsy-Teeny-Weeny Yellow Polka-dot Bikini repeatedly, C.J. finds out that Scarlett is pregnant, and realizes he has only twelve hours to get Piffl released and turn him into an acceptable son-in-law for his boss. Wilder's anarchic satire targets Communism, Coca-Cola, rock n' roll, bureaucratic inefficiency, teenage lust, middle-aged lust, and everything else which wanders into range in this briskly paced farce, which features a vigorous James Cagney in his last leading screen role.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 2.35Full Frame - 1.33Audio: Mono - English Mono - French Mono - SpanishAdditional Release Material: Trailers - 1.
