The Slaughterhouse Massacre (DVD)
Four hapless teenagers set out to discover the truth behind a local legend, uncovering old grudges and invoking a long-dead horror along the way. Justin and Bobby are stars of the college football team, but are struggling in their more academic pursuits. They have to ace their paranormal psychology class in order to stay on the team, so they decide a trip to the old town slaughterhouse is in order; along for the ride are the boys` girlfriends, Stacey and Tina. Years ago, a girl was raped and murdered on the site, and Marty Sickle, a lonely man who lived and worked at the slaughterhouse, was thought to be the culprit. Evidence was lacking and Marty walked, until the murdered young woman`s boyfriend came back for revenge. No body was ever found, however, and local lore has it that on the anniversary of the crime, Marty returns for revenge. The four teenagers decide to investigate, and become trapped in a maze of horrors as someone plays an evil game of cat and mouse with them, and the teens disappear one by one.

In this final volume in McMurtry's Berrybender Quartet, the haughty Lord Berrybender and his entire family are arrested in Santa Fe as war between the US and Mexico looms in the near distance. Forced into exile, the family (including servants) treks across the desert to Mexico--a harsh and exhausting journey that severely reduces their number. But Sin Killer, Tasmin Berrybender's husband, comes to the rescue and lands the group safely in Texas. This windup to McMurtry's frontier series encompasses the siege of the Alamo, the explanation for the mysteries raised in earlier volumes, and the appearance of several real-life characters, including Kit Carson and Davy Crockett.

This classic science fiction novel--part analysis of utopian ideals vs. dystopian realities, part political comparison of anarchism and capitalism--details the internal struggle of a brilliant scientist whose new mathematics are about to bring about a radical change in communication. As Shevek, the scientist, moves between two worlds--a planet and the moon that orbits it--he finds that the diametrical opposition of each world's political, social, and religious structures has left him isolated. Though not dependent on the earlier books, this is the fifth in the Hainish series. Winner of the 1974 Nebula Award, and the 1975 Locus Poll and Hugo awards.
