Director Ron Howard, who impressed audiences with BACKDRAFT (1991) and A BEAUTIFUL MIND (2001), has outdone himself with THE MISSING, a wrenching family drama that unfolds in the midst of a classic 1880s Western. This extraordinarily beautiful film offers astounding panoramic photography and inspired performances that enrich a truly hair-raising journey. As ever, Cate Blanchett brings intense realism to the role of Maggie Gilkeson, a New Mexico cattle rancher who dabbles in the healing arts. Her long-estranged father Samuel Jones (Tommy Lee Jones) is mistaken for an Indian when he inexplicably shows up on her property hoping for reconciliation; he abandoned his family years earlier to adopt a Native American identity. An embittered Maggie sends him away, but capitulates when her eldest daughter Lilly (Evan Rachel Wood) is kidnapped by a band of psychotic Apache killers. When the local sheriff and the U.S. Army balk at chasing the perpetrators, a desperate Maggie turns to her father, praying he is sufficiently savvy in tribal ways to save her daughter.Blanchett and Jones clearly own this movie, and are both superb. Wunderkind child actor Jenna Boyd is spectacular as Maggie's youngest daughter, Dot. Bela Lugosi plays crazed scientist Dr. Paul Carruthers, who feels he has been treated horribly by the cosmetics companies and sets out to get his revenge. To do this, he comes up with an ingenious -- and very deadly -- scheme: he trains bats to murder his enemies. Whenever the creatures smell the scent of a perfume he has created, they attack. Of course, Dr. Carruthers makes sure that the targets of his wrath are covered in the fragrance. Can the madman be stopped before he and his bats strike again?

An island off the Oregon coast is the setting for this salty yarn of ghosts, lepers, betrayal, vengeance, and teen angst. A fog-enshrouded schooner from 1865 returns from the bottom of the sea to wreak vengeance on the locals of the island, and it's up to local DJ Stevie Wayne (Selma Blair), her charter-boat-captain lover, Nick (Tom Welling, from TV's SMALLVILLE), and his wayward girlfriend, Elizabeth (Maggie Grace, from TV's LOST), to save the day. All three are related to the town's founding fathers, with whom the shipbound ghosts have an ancient score to settle. What that score is no one seems to know, but they need to find out, fast. DeRay Davis (BARBERSHOP) provides comic relief as Nick's lusty first mate, but the real scene stealer here is the fog itself, which is much more animated than in the 1980 John Carpenter original. Thanks to some nice CGI work, it slithers in, around, and under everything. Though gussied up with an angst-rock soundtrack and beautiful young TV actors, THE FOG is, at heart, a good old fashioned ghost story, replete with period costumes and inter-dimensional romance. Director Rupert Wainwright (STIGMATA) is good at capturing little details like the eerie tinkling of deep-sea fishing hooks hung out to dry, the textures of moisture-beaded shower stall doors, and the perfectly toned skin of lead actress Grace as she wanders around in her negligee. John Carpenter and his partner, Debra Hill--co-creators of the first FOG--served as producers.

Eddie Murphy is Maximillian, the last of a race of vampires from the Caribbean who travels to New York in search of Rita (Angela Bassett), an NYPD officer whom he considers to be the perfect woman to carry on his dying bloodline. Once he hits Gotham, Maximillian has a series of fish-out-of-water adventures, which include posing as a street preacher, finding a slum apartment that he magically turns elegant, and dropping plenty of one liners. When Maximillian finds Rita, he must compete for her affections with her partner Justice (Allen Payne), which he does with the help of his faithful and decomposing sidekick Julius (Kadeem Hardison). An early 1980s drive-in gem, MOUNTAINTOP MOTEL MASSACRE is a genuinely effective horror movie full of bad acting and cheap effects. Anna Chappell stars as Evelyn, a severely disturbed middle-aged woman who, after being released from a state mental institute, returns to run the hotel of the film's title. It isn't long before something trigger's Evelyn's return to madness and she begins terrorizing her guests
with a sickle and a crazy look in her eye.
