House of the Dead (DVD) House of the Dead (DVD) » House of the Dead (DVD)

Uwe Boll's HOUSE OF THE DEAD, based on a video game, manages to capture the goofy, giddy flavor of the drive-in features and Saturday morning cartoons of the 1970s. The story involves a sextet of attractive, romantically entangled Seattle hipsters who hire a boat manned by a salty sea captain (Jurgen Prochnow) to take them to an island rave. Unfortunately, there is a legend surrounding the island which they do not heed: an evil, immortal Spaniard has been conducting experiments with the undead there for centuries. Countless numbers of shambling zombies are in fact already poised to being a massive attack on the invading ravers. By the time the gang lands, most everyone at the party has already been killed and joined the ranks of the living dead. Fortunately, the captain is also an arms smuggler and soon the dwindling survivors are geared up with heavy artillery, blasting their way through the hordes in high video-game style. Pumping hard core techno rap fusion, swooping MATRX-style camera moves, manic editing, ample gore effects, clips from the actual video game, and a dash of nudity all coalesce to keep things lively. Those who like their horror a little on the cheesy side may just find themselves in zombie-movie nirvana.DVD Features:Region [unknown]Keep CaseAnamorphic WidescreenAudio: Dolby Digital 2.0 - English Dolby Digital 5.1 - English Dolby Digital 6.1 - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Featurette - 1. As the result of a court order, a gang of five multicultural teenage street toughs are sent into the depths of the Florida Everglades in the charge of Joe Tiger (Stephen Lang), an American Indian social worker Vietnam vet who attempts to teach them honorable conduct. Once he sees fit, they make the transition to a rundown house in Miami, where they become involved in taking down a local drug lord (James Remar). BAND OF THE HAND was produced by Michael Mann (at the height of his success with MIAMI VICE). Among the then-unknown cast members are Lauren Holly, and John Cameron Mitchell (HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH). The soundtrack features original songs by Bob Dylan and Prince.

The Grudge: Director's Cut (DVD) The Grudge: Director's Cut (DVD) » The Grudge: Director's Cut (DVD)

A remake of the Japanese horror hit JU-ON (widely considered to be one of the scariest movies ever made), THE GRUDGE is helmed by its original director Takeshi Shimizu. Like its predecessor, this Hollywood version of the film takes place in Tokyo, but most of the main characters are American, including Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER), a young social worker, and her peers. When Karen enters a seemingly abandoned home to look after a mentally disturbed resident, she soon discovers that there's an evil--and very aggressive--presence in the house, and it's lashing out at every person that sets foot inside.Having directed both the original JU-ON and its sequel in Japan, Shimizu was very familiar with his own tale of terror by the time he directed its 2004 incarnation. Using many of the key actors from the previous films (including Takako Fuji and Yuya Ozeki who have unforgettable roles), Shimizu recreates the story with the added advantage of a Hollywood budget (acquired with the help of producer Sam Raimi of SPIDER-MAN fame, who is also a noted horror-movie director). As with many Japanese horror films (particularly the original RING, which strongly influences this movie), THE GRUDGE relies on atmosphere over plot, resulting a series of utterly chilling moments that will leave viewers fascinated and unbelievely frightened.DVD Features:Region (unknown)Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 1.85Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - English, French-Canadian Subtitles - French-Parisian, Spanish - OptionalAdditional Release Material: Documentary - 1.A Powerful Rage: Behind the Grudge Audio Commentary - 1. THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH is Alfred Hitchcock`s remake of his 1935 movie of the same name. While vacationing in French Morocco, an American family becomes accidentally involved in a series of international incidents after the father overhears an assassination plot. Compared with its predecessor, this version is lavish, with a larger budget and a much bigger cast. While maintaining Hitchcock`s fascination with an average Joe caught up in menacing events, the characters portrayed by Jimmy Stewart and Doris Day put a spin on the story that highlights the 1950s sensibilities that influenced the remake. Ben McKenna (Stewart), an American doctor, and his family stumble into the middle of an assassination plot while vacationing in Marrakech. When his son is kidnapped by the conspirators, McKenna must race against the clock to stop the murder and save his son`s life. Stewart, as one might expect, gives a seamless performance as the average man thrown into exceptional circumstances. Day brings a bit of levity and performs the only musical number to appear in a Hitchcock film. (The song,
Que Sera, Sera,
would win an Oscar and become a popular hit.) This later version of Hitchcock`s suspenseful film also features the masterful Albert Hall sequence, arguably almost the equal of the renowned plane sequence in NORTH BY NORTHWEST.
