M has the house watched during the night, and by morning Marton is dead, accidentally poisoned by Jenny, when Gisèle switched her cup of tea with her husband's. He had poisoned his own, with enough to make him sick, but not to kill him. He had shot Janvier to flee the apartment before the return of her husband, wrongly assuming that the watch in the street was for him. He turns himself in after M agrees to keep the woman's connection to the affair a secret.

In the morning Lapointe came by to tell him Lognon had been shot, in the Avenue Junot, and taken to Bichat for surgery.
